Week 28: A Retreat at Averbode Abbey
‘Indulge your whims.’
This phrase made me book my first solo-multiday-retreat in Averbode Abbey.
Located in a forest with lots of hiking routes, I was looking for rest and solitude, away from the business of everyday life. I sure got it!
The guestmaster welcomed me and led me around the parts of the abbey where guests are allowed. He took me along the long corridors with paintings on the walls, my bedroom, the living rooms for guests and the refectory. There were 3 church services every day; one before every meal. Although we were not obliged to attend, I went to almost all of them. The rituals stemming from ancient times, the singing from the fathers,… it might sound strange, but I felt as if I was part of something larger than myself.
Furthermore, I really enjoyed the meals. We were allowed to talk to each other and the other guests proved to be very interesting. Among others, there was a writer, a student, 3 yoga teachers, 3 hikers, a recently retired man, someone attending a breathing workshop nearby, etc. The diversity led to interesting conversations around the table.
I spent the rest of the day in solitude, working on a thesis I had to finish that week. With my mobile phone turned off, I could focus really easily. It took me almost no effort to concentrate on the task that needed to be done.
In the weeks after, I felt really peaceful, at ease with myself and energized.
It really was a valuable experience; one to be repeated!
