Week 9: Making Soap

My artist date for this week took place in the kitchen. I had never made soap before, and thought it would be complicated. The contrary was true! It was actually both easy and fun.

A month ago, while cleaning the kitchen, I discovered I had baking molds in the shape of a dog’s paw. So I decided to use those ones, and not the rectangular one that came with the DIY soap package. We have a small-scale dog boarding house and paw-shaped soaps would be ideal as gifts for our customers.

I had to cut the soap, melt it in the microwave, before adding color and scent. I then had to pour it out into the mold, directly adding flower leafs to the surface before the soap solidified. That was all! It took up all of my concentration, so it was very easy to stay in the moment. What was special about this date – like when baking the rice cake – is that my smell was also included. I have noticed that the more senses are included, the more my inner artist is pleased.
