Week 5: Making a Macrame Owl
In primary school, I made a few bracelets from macrame, but besides that I had no experience. From the age of 12, I never used macrame again. So I thought this would be a nice – and relatively cheap – artist date. It was also something I could do at home, which fitted better into my schedule.
I did a bit of Google research online to find a pattern I liked, before deciding on an owl. I am always fascinated by their wisdom, their calmness, and their steadiness. They have a special meaning for me. So, I then ordered all of the materials I needed without even reading the instructions.
I set aside 2 hours to make the owl. The first sentence of the instructions mentioned that some experience was needed, as some knots might be a bit too difficult for beginners. That didn’t scare me though. So I continued. The touch of the cotton, making the knots one by one, seeing the owl grow little by little, all contributed to my overall mood and my happiness grew the further I got.
I fell in love with the end result. And apparently not only I, because one of my friends asked me if she could buy it. So I handed it over to her, for free, thinking I could make myself a new one because I still had enough cotton and pearls left over.
After 5 weeks of artist dates, I feel more energy, enthusiasm and zest for life. The variety in what I already did, makes me want more. Next week, a new adventure!
The instructions for the owl I made are in Dutch only and can be found here:
